Mapperium: an alternate history map maker

Paint the world into empires. Click a country to found a nation, click its neighbours to grow it, and the borders inside it disappear so it reads as one realm. Name it, give it a colour, and dress the whole map in an era: ancient parchment or a clean modern atlas.

Split a country into its provinces to redraw the borders inside it, mark battles, routes and cities with points, lines and labels, and turn the map into a globe.

Your map is kept in this browser as you work. Download it as a picture (PNG), as an SVG that stays sharp at any size, or as a web page of its own that can be zoomed and turned.

Sign in with an amCharts account (the same one as Chart Maker) to save your maps, open them on any device, and publish them as a page to share or embed.

How to make an alternate history map

  1. Click a country to found a nation, then click its neighbours (or drag with Paint) to grow it.
  2. Name it as you add it, or double-click its name in the Nations list later; its swatch picks its colour.
  3. Split a country into its provinces with the Provinces tool to draw borders inside it.
  4. Or begin from history: pick a year in Start from, under Map, or pick one country in the Map list to map alone.
  5. Pick a style, add points, lines and labels, and download a PNG, an SVG or a web page.

Questions

Is it free? Yes, with no sign-up. Pictures carry a small "Made with amcharts.com" credit, which a Pro account leaves out.

Where do the historical borders come from? From 1648 on, from OpenHistoricalMap, on the date each year stands for. 117 AD, 1200 and 1500 come from Cliopatria (Seshat Global History Databank) under CC BY 4.0, simplified and adapted; maps started from those years credit it on every download. Each country or province here goes whole to the state that held most of it, so a border that cuts through one is left out, and land no state held then stays blank.

Can I map one country? Yes: pick it in the Map list, and its provinces become the regions you paint.

Where is my map kept? In this browser, with its undo history: even New map can be undone. Sign in to keep maps in your account and open them anywhere.

Which keys does it take? V select, B paint, P provinces, M point, L line, T label, E erase; Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on a Mac) undo, Ctrl+Y or Ctrl+Shift+Z redo; Delete removes the selected point, line or label; Enter or a double-click finishes a line; Esc stops adding to a nation; a right-click on the map goes back to Select; Shift+click takes land from another nation; Alt+click picks the nation a piece of land belongs to; hold Space to move the map while painting.
